Where it fits

Along the bottom of a rear window, a bumper, a tailgate or the top of a cargo door. Any hard, smooth surface takes a decal: glass, paint, metal, hard plastic. Read how to apply a vinyl decal before it goes on.

How it goes on

  1. Wash the spot with soapy water, dry it, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Tape the decal across its middle, step back and check it sits level.
  3. Peel one half of the backing, press from the tape outward with a card, then do the other half.
  4. Peel the top sheet back on itself, slowly and close to the surface.

About this design

A loon riding low on still water

One solid shape: a loon swims to the right, sitting low with its long dagger bill held level and its neck curved up from the body. The back edge breaks into a few ragged feather tips. Beneath it, six or seven thin strokes of ripple trail off to both sides. With no inner detail, the profile reads instantly from across a lot.

Canoes and kayaks have a long side just made for this bird. Set the ripples flat to the waterline and the loon looks afloat. If you spend summers at a northern lake, you know it by its call before you ever see it.

Before it goes on glass

Keep any decal off the windshield. On the rear window, California, Texas and Florida tie a decal to outside mirrors on both sides, New York bars stickers its DMV commissioner has not authorized, and your own state may differ, so read its vehicle code.
