Where it fits

A rear window corner, a toolbox lid, a cooler side or a laptop lid. Any hard, smooth surface takes a decal: glass, paint, metal, hard plastic. Read how to apply a vinyl decal before it goes on.

How it goes on

  1. Wash the spot with soapy water, dry it, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol.
  2. Tape the decal across its middle, step back and check it sits level.
  3. Peel one half of the backing, press from the tape outward with a card, then do the other half.
  4. Peel the top sheet back on itself, slowly and close to the surface.

About this design

The Alaska code in a Euro oval

Inside a filled oval, the letters "AK" are cut out in heavy block capitals, so your glass or paint shows through them. A thin ring runs around the outside with a narrow gap between, the way a European country plate is drawn. The solid oval carries from a long way off, and the two letters stay legible because the strokes are thick.

Alaskans living outside the state get asked where they are from at every fuel stop. Set the oval just above the plate on your tailgate and the two letters answer first. It works the same if you grew up there or keep driving back every summer.

Before it goes on glass

Keep any decal off the windshield. On the rear window, California, Texas and Florida tie a decal to outside mirrors on both sides, New York bars stickers its DMV commissioner has not authorized, and your own state may differ, so read its vehicle code.
